Growing Organic Vegetables in Your Backyard For a Healthier and More Nutritious Food

Growing organic vegetables is indeed a good way to enjoy foods that are nutritious and chemical-free. In these times where fruits and vegetables are being produced in large scale and are being too commercialized, you can’t get away with produce being fertilized and sprayed with pesticides and other chemicals, thus organic vegetables are now becoming a trend as well.

If you love gardening and if you do have a space in your own backyard to do gardening, growing organic vegetables is a great option that you can have especially also if you want to make sure that your family is safe from fruits and vegetables that are grown with chemicals. Aside from being sure that your vegetables are fresh, you can also save money from the increasing cost of fresh vegetables and foods being sold now in supermarkets.

Here are some basic things that you may want to know about growing organic vegetables.

Organic gardening does not make use of chemicals and synthetic fertilizers in growing your vegetables. Instead, you can make use of your garden waste, kitchen waste and some naturally available fertilizers like plant and animal waste.

With this, you can be sure that you are eating chemical-free and safe foods. Of course, you have no way of knowing if the vegetables you are buying at the market are free from the fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, preservatives and many other chemicals that are used in growing and packing the vegetables. Instead of turning to vegetables and fruits for a healthier food that you can bring to your family, you may be also facing some health risks on these foods grown with chemicals.

Aside from being healthy, growing your own healthy vegetables will also save you money in buying them from the supermarket. If you opt for the ‘organic’ ones, they are also more expensive and, of course, you may not know if they really are free of chemicals.

Aside from that, organic gardening is also ecologically friendly as you are helping renew and restore the fertility of the soil and helping the environment in general. Prolonged use of commercial fertilizers, pesticides and chemicals can damage the natural properties of the soil and disturb the natural ecosystems giving rise to more hard-to-control pests and weeds, and giving rise to a less fertile soil.

Growing organic vegetables is indeed a healthy option for you and your family. All you need is to invest a little of your time, effort and patience and you will reap amazing benefits for a very long time. It may be time-consuming at first glance, but once you have set up everything, growing organic vegetables is just easy, as nature will do most of the part of taking care of your plants and vegetables.

One important thing that you need to be able to start producing your own healthy and nutritious food is adequate knowledge on how to prepare the soil, finding the right vegetables suitable for your garden, and learning some techniques in making your garden fertile and pest-free without using any chemicals.

Cooking Organic Vegetables is Toxic

We make the choice to buy only organic vegetables, knowing we are doing a great thing for our families and ourselves. We bring those organic vegetables home, throw them in a pot or skillet to cook them up, and serve them with a huge smile and sense of pride!

SURPRISE! What we’ve actually just done is cooked all of the vital nutrients OUT OF THEM, actually changing the molecular structure of the food and rendered it TOXIC.

I know, hard to believe, right? But it’s true. And here’s why.

Raw or living food, which is food that has not been processed or cooked, contains enzymes. Enzymes assist in the digestion of foods. They are known to be the “Life-Force” and or “energy” of food.

From Wikipedia:

Enzymes are proteins that catalyze (i.e. accelerate) chemical reactions. In these reactions, the molecules at the beginning of the process are called substrates, and the enzyme converts them into different molecules, the products. Almost all processes in the cell need enzymes in order to occur at significant rates. Since enzymes are extremely selective for their substrates and speed up only a few reactions from among many possibilities, the set of enzymes made in a cell determines which metabolic pathways occur in that cell.

That’s a BIG definition, I know. To put it simply, enzymes help our bodies to digest and absorb food. Without them, our bodies function less efficiently by not properly utilizing the food we do eat, and even causing toxicity in the body. This is said to be a major reason why so many Americans are overweight.

Raw or living food is a very viable way to ensure we are getting more enzymes and minerals into our bodies. Raw food is just as the name implies, living food that is never heated above 115 degrees, give or take 10 degrees, and is NEVER processed in any way.

True “rawists”, as they are called, or “raw foodists”, believe in eating only an uncooked, unprocessed and organic plant based diet. So what would a raw foodist grocery list look like?

Organic, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouts, grains and legumes in sprout form, seaweeds, microalgae (spirulina, chlorella, etc…), and fresh juices.

Some say a true raw food diet is 75% of the above raw foods, others argue it’s 100% or nothing.

But….as you know….here at Moms Organic House we don’t do “all or nothing”, we do practical, every day. That means that if we incorporate even 1 raw food into our daily organic lifestyle, we are doing something healthy. When we do that something healthy, consistently, we are doing even better.

If you are interested in exploring the benefits of raw food, organic fruits and vegetables are the obvious place to start.

Raw foods are easy to digest, and they provide the maximum amount of energy with minimal bodily effort. Studies have shown that living foods have healing powers that can alleviate many illnesses from low energy, allergies, digestive disorders, weak immune system, high cholesterol, candida, to obesity & weight problems (weight normalization), etc.. Research and real life experiences have also shown that a person can prevent a body’s healthy cells from turning into malignant cancerous cells by consuming mostly a raw food diet & whole organic foods!

Sprouts, according to, are a great way to add fresh and vital nutrients to your diet. The sprouting process brings out many enzymes in the germinated seeds, legumes, and grains which makes them easy to digest. Raw sprouts, otherwise known as living foods, are full of pure vitamins, minerals and chlorophyll, as well as a good source of protein. Essential amino acids are found in some sprouts.

Sprouts are an EASY way to incorporate raw food into your organic lifestyle. You can eat them as a snack, use them in salads and put them on wraps or sandwiches.

Organic, raw vegetables and fruits is another very easy way to increase your raw food intake. Eating them raw, or juicing is something you can easily add to your daily routine and it will yield you huge health benefits.

Raw foods are by their very nature, more perishable. There are some general guidelines to follow to ensure your safety:

* Wash your hands thoroughly before handling raw foods.

* Wash the raw foods thoroughly. Soaking in water with a tbsp. of vinegar and then 2-3 rinses is highly recommended, especially for store bought raw foods. Fresh from the garden are generally safest, but even then a few thorough rinses won’t hurt.

* Remove any rotted or blemished parts of the raw food. If organic, leave the skins on as there are significant nutrient value in them.

* When juicing, prepare and drink immediately rather than storing them in the refrigerator. They quickly lose their nutrient value and they tend to spoil much quicker than you think.

So with a little less cooking, and a few safety steps, you can easily and effectively add raw food to your practical, every day organic lifestyle and get some great nutritional value from it.

Seven Reasons For You to Grow an Organic Vegetable Garden of Your Own

In the last ten years there has been huge advancements in technology which has led to homogenization and mechanization of farming. Now farmers have access to herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, mass production, additives and pesticides. This is most definitely affecting the health of mankind. New diseases, like bird flu, are spreading very quickly among humans as well as animals.

The W.H.O. (World Health Organization) has produced certain reports that show how chemicals as well as other dangerous products that are used in our food along with the process in which the food is manufactured is actually threatening our health.

If your garden has a little extra space where a few pots can fit, you should consider growing an organic vegetable garden of your own. Here you can see seven reasons why this would be good for you:-

1. There are no additives in organic vegetables – Many organic food associations have studied and concluded that additives in the food you eat can lead to osteoporosis, migraines, hyperactivity and heart diseases.

2. There are no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides – These chemicals are applied on crops so that they can be grown irrespective of weather conditions or plague and they greatly affect quality of the crops. Also, most pesticides are poisonous to human beings.

3. No genetic modification [GM] of vegetables – Hormones, drugs and antibiotics are used on many vegetables to get more, larger vegetables. This practice has one consequence. That the vegetables all look similar and are pretty much tasteless.

4. Eating organic vegetables made yourself is healthy – These vegetables won’t have any of the chemicals or products mentioned above. They are much more natural as compared to any ones that you may find at a super market. You won’t be risking your health as there will definitely be nothing dangerous added in your vegetables.

5. Home grown organic vegetables are more tasty – When pesticides, hormones, antibiotics and synthetic fertilizers are used to grow vegetables, they grow un-naturally and have no taste. When you grow them yourself you will be able to experience their full flavor.

6. Growing organic vegetables is environmentally friendly – Since you are not using pesticides or any other harmful substances, you won’t damage the air or the soil with these harmful components.

7. If you grow organic vegetables of your own then you are adding to self sustainability as well as sustainability of our planet. There are many small communities across the country where vegetables are grown naturally and then exchanged between the members and this creates a better, much more friendly place for everyone.

Lastly, growing organic vegetables simply means that we will not add anything, that they are not naturally meant to have, to help them grow. As you will be able to guess, fertilizers, additives, hormones or pesticides are all components that are not found in food that is grown naturally. To take good care of your own health, you should grow organic vegetables of your own. All you need is a few pots.

What Is Organic Baby Food and Why Should I Care?

We all want our little ones to grow up with healthy and strong bodies and immune systems. The best way to ensure that happens is to start your child’s early years with a healthy, organic diet. Organic baby meals are grown and processed without genetic engineering, harmful pesticides or artificial flavors and colors. The animals raised for meat and dairy use in organic baby food are raised cruelty-free, without growth hormones and are fed organic diets. The end result is organic baby food that is all-natural and unprocessed.

Every organ in your baby’s body is growing, and it needs vitamins and nutrients to do that. Do you want your baby to absorb chemicals in the cells of their growing organs? That is exactly what happens when you feed your child food grown with pesticides and made with preservatives. Organic baby food is grown and processed without the use of any chemical additives. That means that no pesticides are used on the fruits and vegetables used in organic baby food. No artificial flavors, artificial colors, or preservatives are used while processing and packaging organic baby food. The obvious benefit of this is that none of these harmful additives are entering your baby’s growing body.

The fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy used in organic baby food are not genetically-engineered, which is generally used to grow produce as big and fast as possible. Growing food organically gives the fruits and vegetables more time to develop the flavor. That is why organic fruits and vegetables have a crisper, fresher taste than genetically-engineered food. In addition, fruits do not need an artificial sweetener or added sugar. Organically-grown fruit is sweet and delicious all on its own. Babies are still learning about what tastes are enjoyable. Feeding your baby organic baby food instead of bland, genetically-engineered food with artificial flavors and sweeteners ensures that as your child grows, the good, healthy food choices on which your child learns through you, stay an integral part of life from infancy through adulthood.

People have only been eating food grown using chemical pesticides and packed with preservatives for a few generations. Before that, people always ate organic food. It was called food. Everything was grown naturally. The benefit of eating genetically-enhanced food is a monetary one and is much greater for the manufacturer than the consumer. When vegetables and fruit are genetically-engineered, the flavor is lost. To give the food flavor, then, requires artificial flavors and sweeteners. This artificial flavoring pales in comparison to the natural flavors of food. After the food goes through all that processing, your body (and your child’s) consumes chemicals that were never meant for consumption. After starting an organic diet, people report having more energy, gaining a better physique and experiencing better general, over-all health. If you decide to feed your baby organic baby food, you give your child a healthy start to live that, hopefully, lasts a lifetime.
